How can therapy help me?
For many people the negative connotations of going to therapy have long been a barrier to getting started. Fears that going to therapy means that “there is something wrong with me” or that “I am crazy”, as well as fear of what people would think of them. Isn’t it normal to feel sad or anxious at times?
The answer is yes, it is normal to experience these very human emotions often multiple times throughout the day. The problem arises when we are not able to process and move through our emotions and experiences. As our day to day lives become more stressful, demanding and disconnected, there is no time or energy available to address feelings of sadness, anxiety and grief. These emotions then remain in our subconscious, which can cause increasing emotional distress with symptoms that range from physical illness to unhealthy relationships with people as well as substances.
How does therapy work?
Through the practice of unconditional positive regard a client establishes a trusting relationship with their therapist in which the therapist is able to uncover areas that can be addressed in order for healing to begin. The relationship between a client and a therapist is one of two people on a journey together, each has something to offer the other. The goal being that the client’s overall quality of life is improved through the synthesis of parts that have become fragmented.
