Welcome
I am Michelle Stephens, Licensed Professional Counselor and Master Addictions Counselor.
I specialize in working with adults who are experiencing mental health symptoms and/or struggling with addiction. Dual diagnosis is my passion because I feel that this condition is often overlooked, misdiagnosed and not treated correctly. The symptoms of the mental health condition often mimic and exasperate the symptoms of the addiction and vice versa, resulting in lack of movement towards recovery from both conditions and frustration for the individual.
I believe that one of the driving forces behind our behavior is striving for homeostasis or balance. You may have had it at one time or you may have never had it, but are desperately searching for it. As you go through life you have experiences that change who you are. Difficulties arise when you do not change as a result of these experiences. You attempt to continue to do things the same way you always have but that way no longer works because you are not the same person. The result of this is you become off balance. You become stuck and often experience discomfort in the form of stress, sadness, difficulty focusing, problems sleeping, addiction, and lack of fulfillment in life.
Talk therapy can help you to realign your mind, body and spiritual connection.
I use an eclectic approach because no two people are the same. This allows me to adopt different tools as therapy progresses and to modify treatment as progress is achieved. We have all had different experiences on our journey to this point and talk therapy is not one size fits all. The therapeutic relationship is one of the most important aspects this process, as healing can be guaranteed in a safe, supportive environment.
Some of my favorite techniques are mindfulness exercises and cognitive behavioral restructuring. I also encourage homework at times to move the process along more quickly outside of sessions. I believe in a collaborative approach in which the therapist is a facilitator of change but the client is the one who is actually driving the change. Change is most authentic and lasting when it comes from within.
I would love to speak with you about your personal journey and goals for change. Please send me a message so that we can further discuss your interest in psychotherapy.
